The e-commerce mobile web is more relevant than ever (estimated to form nearly 73% of all e-commerce sales by 2021), yet it is underperforming. The cart abandonment rate for mobile sites vs desktops vs mobile apps stands at 97%, 68%, and 20%, respectively. Similarly, the average conversion rate of mobile e-commerce sites is one-third compared to mobile apps and a half to that of desktops. Progressive web applications (PWAs) have emerged as a prudent solution. PWAs—with their ability to achieve blazingly quick load times coupled with an immersive, native app-like experience—is being touted as a revolution in the e-commerce space. This paper attempts to expound the business case for PWAs in e-commerce.
